Texting: Kids' Future, Teens' escape route, Grandparents' dilemma and of course, Parents' nightmare. Well, more like phones, they are everywhere! under the pillow, on the cabinet, in the bathroom, behind books, in pockets, in bags, in the fridge! no wonder parents can't control them! the only thing missing is that teens form a brain link to those techno monsters.
But there's some good things about the wonders of technology, but as all good things in the world, there is an opposite to every action.
For example, My brothers live in Chile and calling them directly costs a lot of money, but thanks to social networks and "apps" like Facebook, Skype or WhatsApp i can communicate with them at an almost daily basis . That's how i found out that my brother Nicolas had a band AND that they are playing live in NY. Or how i found out that I'm a soon to be aunt!
Another way that social networks help is by transmitting ideas or images, thanks to YOUtube now you can search for news on practically anything! or if i forget to take note on something in Chemestry class, i always have WhatsApp or Skype to text or call my friends who might have notes in the subject!
All though, texting might be taking a severe health toll on texters like me.
Some of the pocket monsters aren't touch, so you must press the keyboard: causing thumb cramps or deformation.
but what can the modern phones do?
Well, looking at a small, bright screen can cause astigmatism, which leads to myopia and eventually minor blindness.
But, what is really bad in the texting matter is what people say, because hurtful words may cause a severe depression on the reader. it can lead to cutting, anorexia and eventually suicide.
Another death note is doing things "half way" like crossing the road, doing homework, working, driving and socializing in the non binary code world. Texting and driving is a severe matter in the US, since in 2011 at least 23% of car crashes involved a mobile phone, which would be about 1.3 million crashes! since it only takes 5 seconds to get distracted and end up being responsible for 4 or more fatalities!
Texting also affects your economic status since the new type of texter: the hyper-texter. a normal hyper-texter spends more than 3 hours surfing the internet or even more surfing their phone. Texting is a window for teens to keep a balance between ignoring parents and having peace and quiet. But i confess, while writing homework and hearing my phone buzz, its very hard not to stand up and reply the text. A normal texter like me sends 136 text messages in two weeks, that for a hyper-texter is what they might type in an hour. The average hyper-texter sends around 10, 000 messages a month, which is like taking a knife and stabbing your wallet. but a good thing about hyper-texters is that they have an incredible capacity to multi-task.
Another common question asked by both parents and teachers is if texting decays normal writing and if its a danger to tests. Well, fear not! because, some texters like me and my friends DO notice the difference in formal language and text language. For example me, i don't make abbreviations like "txt"or "l8r" or "2 l8" but i do use the abbreviation for "What's up?" also known as "sup?" or the common abbreviations: "ttyl"and "lol". But mostly my biggest mistakes are that i don't use the symbol " ' " so instead of writing "don't"i write "dont". But i know the difference between a test and a chat.
So next time, be aware.
